Pictured is a local tree in which a squirrel has spent the summer playing. With reference to The Treflach Squirrel blog post (11.02.20), squirrels build their nests in the forks of trees when other winter quarters, like hollows in trees, aren't available. They don't hibernate but shelter in spherical shaped collections of twigs that are lined inside with moss and pine needles. They can be so well insulated it can be up to 20 - 30 degrees centigrade warmer than the outside temperature. This time of year they become visible about 3 metres off the ground. Lived in ones have a more round roof while the rest are experiments gone wrong made by younger, inexperienced individuals.
