We think we lead stressful lives but think of the life of a tree. It clings onto a spinning rock with roots to absorb the nutrients, a rock that hurtles around the sun at different angles and positions which in turn creates seasons, weather and climate. Positive phototropism encourages branches to contort themselves in gravity defying positions. This can lead to situations (as happens in Treflach within minutes of each other) when large branches just drop out of trees on quiet days as large volumes of sap head into the canopy in a hot dry spell which followed a cool wet spell in late May - See photos.
We are fast approaching Lammas when some trees have a second flush before autumn. This can be to recover from insect infestation that has devoured or damaged leaves which in turn boosts the trees life force.
A thing of beauty can hide what is in reality a tough existence.
