The Grasshoppers of Treflach

I am no entomologist but grasshoppers, crickets and ground hoppers of which there are 29 species in the UK are usually heard but not seen.  They have no voice but make a distinct noise that on a hot July day is the sound of drought conditions on the unimproved grassland side lands of Treflach.

Grasshoppers tend to be green and out in daylight whereas crickets busily chirp at night. Grasshoppers tend to be herbivores whereas crickets tend to be omnivores.  Important in the food chain they are a barometer of a rich bio diversity in the landscape in natural habitat where fungicide and insecticide have not been used.

Grasshoppers are related to the locust family but are rarely seen as pests as they only thrive in uncultivated areas where the soil is healthy and not compacted.  The eggs are laid in the previous summer and hatch when ground conditions are warm and dry which is good for young bugs to survive into adults.
